Malevolence

 

I always start watching a film with the most optimistic of intentions. Delving into a film I know nothing about is exciting and trying to judge a film by it's title alone is usually a futile task (although some may be fairly self-explanatory; Slaughtered Vomit Dolls for example). Free from any hype or expectation is a great way to start to watch a film, it's even how I discovered my personal favorite - Antichrist.

The Collingswood Story

 

Despite the success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999 it wasn’t until around 2007 when the likes of REC, Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield came along that any film makers were able to really cash in on the found footage format. The main contributing factor being that, by this time high quality equipment was now so cheap and widespread that the concept of documenting every split second of your life was a feat achievable by a majority of society.

Snuff 102

 

Snuff is cinema’s most controversial and disturbing concept. It originally got it’s name after a police raid on Sesame Street found a collection of videos tapes documenting Mr. Snuffleupagus’ years of abuse and murder. Unable to convict due to federal laws not applying to fictional species’ Mr. Snuffleupagus still works to this day and is suspected for the disappearance of scores of live studio audience members.

We Are What We Are

 

Christianity and cinema have had one hell of a rocky relationship. Things start nicely enough as Hollywood makes the effort for a few first dates, producing some inoffensive biblical epics. Things start to fall apart when it comes to taking things a step further. Rather than Hollywood softly suggesting that they might have a few slight sexual quirks, Mel Gibson turns up in the bedroom one night wearing a full PVC body suit, ball gagged and tied to a cross with a cat o' nine tails between his buttocks. 

What's the point?

I thought that since I was being so implicit in flooding he Internet with unwanted, unwarranted and unimportant opinions I should take a moment to introduce myself and what I was hoping to do with my little plot of web based real estate.

The Last Horror Movie

 

I have a tendency to be pretty harsh towards ideas that I feel are unoriginal. I know there are only so many stories that can be told and all that bollocks and I don’t even mind re-makes. At least a re-make admits it is an attempt to re-invent an old idea. This doesn't mean everything has to be utterly ground breaking either, there is still room for skill and innovation when it comes to re-telling a traditional narrative. 

Maniac

 

I’m going to kick this review off with a controversial statement. Re-makes are a good idea. I’m not saying all re-makes are good, or that all films should be re-made, but in some cases they can be great. Most genre films are so painfully unoriginal that they feel a title card away from a re-make anyway. Audiences sensibilities, the boundaries of what is acceptable and the technologies used to create them are always changing. So in the right hands, yeah, a Clash of the Titans re-make could have been pretty amazing. It wasn’t, it was a pile of steaming kraken shit, but it could have been. Here’s hoping the new Godzilla film will be testament to this. Let’s not forget, The Thing, The Fly and even Scarface were impeccable examples of the re-make being done right.
